RE: confused about WD hitches.

Equal-i-zer® claims to work with surge brakes.

The Equal-i-zer® works with boat trailers, trailers with surge brakes, utility trailers, horse trailers, cargo haulers, pole (or single) tongue and many other trailer types."

RE: Hitch extenders.

I believe you can take the TW rating at the normal ball position and then ratio that weight by the old overhang (ball-to-rear-axle distance) compared to the new overhang to get the new, reduced TW rating.
TW(new) = TW(old) x OH(old) / OH(new)
Also, keep in mind that extenders also make backing more difficult and increase the trailer's sway effect on the TV (I strongly doubt sway would be a problem in this case unless you are hauling scrap batteries or something like that!).

RE: first time full timer here i need help with a few questions

A big thing is to reduce your power requirements in the first place, like good (not burnt out by voltage fluctuations found in 12VDC systems hooked to alternators and converters) LED lights all around, heating that doesn't require a fan, etc.

RE: Electric Company Discriminates Against Full-time RVer

Since the rules vary by state and by county, you've got to check locally to find what works and what doesn't.

RE: Living the full-time Lifestyle

I found I had a mixture of both traveling and sitting -- I liked moving around and seeing stuf, although I sometimes had an urge to plunk down and stay awhile in really nice settings -- I also felt good going back to places where I had friends, like winter RV park in Florida or here in Washington -- The point is that I had my choice of BOTH ways and exercised that choice by turning or not turning the Climate Adjusters under my trailer...

RE: New Guy

I full-timed three years in a Jayco 16', followed by six years in my Scamp 13' -- How much room you need depends on YOU! Don't buy anything new until you know what size is right for you!

RE: Air shocks?

Here's how to settle the suspension assist question -- Take vehicle to two-platform scale and air the assist up and down, noting the change (or not) in front-end weight.
Personally, I do not see how suspension assist can move frame & body weight but not move cargo or tongue weight -- They are both pounds...
BTW, I had air shocks on a previous pickup (Sears, were 16 years old when I removed them!) and when I removed them, I noticed that one of the shock studs welded to my axle was significantly bent -- Surprised it didn't break!

RE: wheel bearings

They are automatically "over lubed" if one follows Dexter/Al-Ko directions to pump new grease in until old grease is out (That lets you examine old grease for water contamination, in which case the bearings should be cleaned, examined and seal replaced).

RE: Need help too old to tow

If he isn't comfortable towing, then either the rig is not properly balanced, with tongue weight and tongue angle and WDH set up right OR he is becoming less confident in his driving abilities -- If he's feels his abilities are declining then he should be towing -- His gut is telling him something that he should heed!
A Class C rig would indeed be a great compromise!
Any lending institution should have a copy of NADA RV Book, or look it up on-line:

RE: miss the CG

You guys might try some winter camping -- If you don't want to un-winterize the rig, just use jug water, the CG potties (or a Porta-Potty) and forgo showers for "helmet baths" -- The campfires will be especially appreciated!

RE: Hayes Endeavor Brake Controller

I had a failure with my EBay Prodigy (Came in a UHaul box) and called tech support -- They said just take it to any dealer selling them and they will swap it, no back and forth with factory. I did it and they did it!

RE: Good place for tires?

Carlisle, like Goodyear, had some bad runs that created problems -- I *personally* doubt that Wal-Mart would still be carrying them if there was still a problem (YMMV, of course) -- They used to be an excellent tire back when friends and I had a lot of boat and utility trailers between us, but I haven't used any lately.
BTW, a couple of years ago, I was contacted by an attorney looking for Carlisle incidents to bring some kind of lawsuit, but she seemed frustrated at finding actual incidents where the tire was clearly at fault -- At that time, everyone was stampeding away from Carlisle towards Goodyear Marathons....

RE: Effect of packing on tougue weight?

For vehicles with a tongue weight restriction that is less than 10% of the towing capacity, the answer is a WDH to move some of the TW to the front axle.
Lots of good advice above, esp Mike's about getting the real, loaded the way you would tow it, axle and tongue weights of the trailer. Once you have the total, to compute the TW, then you can mess around at home with a bathroom scale.

RE: Battery charger selection

If the RV is plugged into shor power, you will not need a battery maintainer.
That's true IF the converter has Smart (multi-stage charging with a float mode) -- Many converters don't and one risks overcharging the battery...

It's also easy to do side-to-side weighings at the WADOT scales because they don't have the side fences!

RE: Towing questions

Shipping weight would most likely include options and battery and empty LP, and fresh water tanks.
Constant shifting indicates a need for a lower gear to lock it in.
I recommend you install a transmission temperature gauge so you can see what's happening while underway.
